The Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block’s newly elected Mardin deputy and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Co-Chair, Ahmed Turk, assessed the election results. He said to DIHA News Agency that "goals were achieved but we could do better". The final results of the election are very important for the Block and for the Kurdish people.
“In Kurdistan, what we did is very important,” said Turk, and he continued, “We participated in the election for a democratic constitution, for democratic autonomy and we are still struggling; for education in our own language and to free our friends from prisons. We are clearly embarking on a journey by making these pledges for our people.”
Turk explained that the election is like a referendum. “The election results mean that the Kurdish people are united and our demands are going to be on the national agenda. If not, there will be more pain and more problems in the future,” he said.
Turk said that the Kurdish people continue to show their determinations after the election: “The only choice that we have is dialogue and negotiation. The message is very clear; the state needs to pull itself together. We are calling for a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue. We will no longer accept a life like this. We will continue to be united and we will continue doing peaceful civil disobedience actions.”
For Kurds, Democratic Autonomy is essential, said Turk and continued; “The new constitution must be based on democratic autonomy, which must be a topic in the open for discussion and we will work towards this. If these demands are ignored by the state, the people will create their own method to establish the system they are aiming for.
Mr Turk said that “in the 2007 elections, Kurdish people were caught unprepared and they could not organize the party or people. “I have seen one more time that our collective efforts are very important. In 2007, we only got 81,000 votes in the Mardin area. However, today, in the same place, we got 166,000. Indeed, our people have proven how much they are linked to the struggle for freedom, our demands and the way we practice politics. This solidarity is definitely very important and it has put responsibility on our shoulders. Our people have done their duty. From now on, parliamentary duty will be performed by us and our friends. We will do our best to be worthy of representing Kurdish people and all Bloc supporters in the parliament.”
