Turkish nationalists brutally attacked five Kurdish youth on World Peace Day

DIHA News Agency reported that a group of Turkish nationalists brutally attacked five Kurdish youth on World Peace Day - September 1- in Zeytinli Village in Izmir’s Selçuk district.

While the five youths, Kemal Ünsal, Orhan Yakal, Mahsum Esen, Azad Esen and Ömer Sezak, were shopping, a group of nationalists verbally assaulted them. The five did not respond to the taunting and headed home on their motorcycles. The assailants then pursued the five by taxi. When the nationalists caught up with the five, the taxi ran into the motorcycles, throwing the riders to the ground, at which point the attackers began beating the youths with cleavers, chains and sticks. Thinking that they had beaten Ünsal to death, the attackers left him on the roadside and fled.

A family driving down the road found Ünsal and took him to the hospital, where the gendarmerie detained the four other Kurdish youth who fled during the skirmishes and took them to the Selçuk Provincial Gendarmerie Command.

Threatened by both the group of nationalists, and the gendarmerie, the five Kurdish youth applied to the Izmir branch of the Human Rights Association (İHD) for legal aid.
