230 kurdish families expelled due to Iranian invasion of South Kurdistan

CHOMAN, -- 230 families have been expelled from their dwelling since July 16 when the Iranian aggression started in Southern Kurdistan, said Mayor of Choman district.

The attacks of the Iranian army hit the civilians the most. As a result of the Iranian army’s bombardment on the villages in South Kurdistan in parallel with the operation at the borders of Qendil, Xwakurk and Xinere regions, hundreds of people were forced to leave their home and live in unhealthy conditions.

Choman Mayor Abdul Wahid Qewami stated that about 230 families in border areas fled their villages and took shelter in safe areas. According to AFP’s report, Qewami said; “Iranian attacks still continue but not as permanent as the attacks in the previous days”.

According to the Mayor, a camp was made in the Mewanan village in Balayan region to receive the migrating families. Qewami said; “We asked international organizations to send tents and other basic materials for those who left their houses and all their property.”

In a statement on Tuesday, International Office for Migration’s (OIM) Spokesman Bertram Douglas reported that 203 families were registered before the authorities. Remarking that these families need "water and shelter” in particular, Douglas noted that beds and water purification equipments were provided by the OIM.
While the UN Immigration Agency provides tent assistance to the region, local authorities provide water to the villagers.

Douglas said; "These families will be unable to survive without a long standing assistance) Most of them left their fields and animals behind.”

At least 3 civilians were killed and 11 wounded so far in the Iranian bombardment on South Kurdistan villages. In addition, 35 villages were damaged, according to the Kurdish government.
